Grand Rapids Survey Department Manager
The Survey Department Manager at Hurley & Stewart – Grand Rapids will lead and manage a team responsible for executing a wide range of surveying projects. This role encompasses overseeing department operations, driving efficiency, and ensuring high-quality project delivery. The ideal candidate will cultivate a collaborative team environment, support staff development, and contribute to the overall growth and success of the department.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with clients to define survey specifications, project scope, and schedules in the greater Grand Rapids area.
- Develop project proposals, establish goals, and ensure alignment with QA/QC standards.
- Maintain regular client communication to ensure satisfaction and identify additional revenue opportunities.
- Review and sign contracts, manage change orders, and oversee project scope throughout the lifecycle.
- Lead daily survey operations and coordinate with field and office staff to ensure timely and quality deliverables.
- Conduct team meetings, track project progress, and resolve issues to meet deadlines and client expectations.
- Mentor and support staff development within the survey department.
- Work cross-functionally with other departments to optimize resource allocation and scheduling.
- Manage project financials, including budgeting, billing, collections, profitability analysis, and support broader financial planning initiatives.
- Contribute to strategic planning and organizational growth initiatives.
Knowledge and Experience:
- Over 10 years of progressive experience in land surveying, with a strong track record of increasing responsibility and leadership.
- In-depth knowledge of surveying principles and practices, including boundary surveys, topographic surveys, land divisions, subdivision plats condominiums, and construction staking.
- Proficient in AutoCAD Civil 3D and the Microsoft Office Suite.
- Skilled in the use of modern surveying technologies and equipment, including total stations and GPS/GNSS systems.
- Well-versed in industry standards and regulatory requirements, including ALTA/NSPS Land Title Surveys and state-specific guidelines.
- Experienced in project management processes such as planning, scheduling, budgeting, and risk assessment.
- Capable of interpreting complex engineering plans, legal descriptions, and survey data to ensure precision and regulatory compliance.

Civil Engineer / Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids Location
Hurley & Stewart Engineering is seeking a highly motivated individual to work on our energetic team as a Civil Engineer. This full time, hourly position requires an organized individual capable of practical thinking and problem solving for a variety of civil engineering projects. Tasks include civil engineering design, project coordination, road and utility design, site grading, storm water drainage design, and detailing.
Applicants must have a B.S. degree in engineering, a valid driver’s license, and AutoCAD knowledge. Training will be provided. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 2-10 years of civil engineering design experience.

Project Manager / Professional Engineer / Grand Rapids Location
Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) with 5 years of experience required. We are seeking a highly skilled engineer to oversee projects and manage design staff. Your Project Manager skills would be the go-to person for all design staff that have questions regarding H&S standard protocols, use of the design tools, CAD operation, report writing/formatting and file management. Responsibilities would include:
Project management of multiple projects
- Coordinating high level design criteria with project specific design staff prior to design implementation. Spending time daily with design staff to meet design criteria
- Develop new processes to encourage efficiency and accuracy of design process
- Preparing formal letters, reports, documents for submittals
- Use of stormwater design tools, HydroCAD (SCS tr-20 method, rational method), runoff spreadsheets, StormCAD, etc.
- Spend time daily with staff to assist them through the design process
- Experience in roadway design, site development, municipal and hydrologic required
- Oversee construction inspectors, surveyors and Geotech staff

Hurley & Stewart is seeking candidates to work on our energetic team as an Engineering Intern in our Kalamazoo office. This seasonal, full time, hourly position requires an organized, hard-working individual who communicates well, seeks hands-on, practical civil engineering experience, and likes working both outdoors on construction sites and in an office.
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 2 years of civil engineering coursework and experience reading plans and specifications.
Job tasks include construction oversight and documentation, contract and closeout procedures, materials testing, CAD drafting, and client interaction. Training will be provided.
Applicant must have a valid driver’s license and “satisfactory results” on a motor vehicle record check. This minimum 3-month duration, seasonal position is available for the entire 2024 construction season (March-November) but can be coordinated with a candidate’s availability and class schedule. Varying experience levels are encouraged to apply. Salary range for this position is $15-$18 per hour commensurate with experience.
